Terms of service.

The short version: use it for what it’s for, your data is yours, we are not your accountant, and we can both walk away whenever we want.

These terms (“Terms”) govern your use of Expense Tracker (“the Service”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to be bound by them. If you don’t agree, don’t use the Service — or run the AGPLv3 source code yourself.

1. The Service

Expense Tracker lets you upload bank statements, parses them with an AI model, categorizes transactions, and lets you query the result through a chat assistant and dashboards. The Service is delivered as a hosted web app, with an optional iOS and Android client.

2. Account and account number

We mint a random account number when you first use the Service. That number is your only identity unless you optionally attach a recovery email. You are responsible for keeping your account number safe. If you lose it and have no recovery email on file, we cannot recover your account — that’s the privacy trade-off you opted into.

3. Subscription, trial, and billing

  • Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial. No credit card is required to start.
  • After the trial, paid features (uploads, AI chat, AI audit) require an active subscription. Read-only access to data you already have stays free.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period (monthly or annual). You can cancel at any time from Settings → Subscription. Cancelling stops future renewals; we do not pro-rate refunds for partial periods.
  • Lifetime tier is a one-time payment, limited to the first 100 customers. “Lifetime” means the lifetime of the Service, not yours — if we shut the hosted Service down, you’ll get at least 90 days notice and a final data export.
  • Pricing and trial length may change for new customers. Your active subscription stays at the price you signed up at until you cancel.

4. Self-hosting (AGPLv3)

The full source code for Expense Tracker is published under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3 (AGPLv3). If you run a modified version of the Service as a network service available to others, you must make your modified source code available to those users under the same license. Self-hosting for personal use carries no obligations beyond what the AGPLv3 already requires.

5. Your data

Your data is yours. We hold it in trust to deliver the Service. You can export everything via GET /api/me/export at any time. You can permanently delete everything via DELETE /api/me at any time. See the privacy policy for what we collect and why.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Upload statements or transaction data that don’t belong to you or that you don’t have permission to process.
  • Attempt to circumvent rate limits, the subscription gate, or the per-user AI quota.
  • Use the Service to build a competing dataset (e.g. scraping generated insights at scale) or to train another AI model.
  • Probe for security vulnerabilities without prior written consent. Responsible-disclosure reports to support@expenses.pinguin.drilind.com are welcome.

7. No financial advice

Expense Tracker is not your accountant, your financial advisor, your tax preparer, or your fiduciary. The dashboards, insights, audit results, and AI chat replies are informational only. They may be wrong. They may omit important context. They are not regulated financial advice. Do not make investment, tax, debt, or other significant financial decisions solely on the basis of anything the Service tells you. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.

8. AI output

The Service uses third-party AI models (OpenRouter, Google Gemini, et al.) to categorize transactions and answer chat queries. AI output is generated and not curated by us; it can contain factual errors, misclassifications, or confidently wrong statements. You are responsible for reviewing categorizations and edits before acting on them. We provide a one-click undo on every AI-driven change.

9. No warranty

The Service is provided “as is” and“as available”, with no warranty of any kind — express or implied. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or fit for any particular purpose. We do not warrant that AI-generated categorizations are accurate.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, our aggregate liability for any claim arising out of or relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim, or (b) one hundred euros (€100). In no event are we liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including lost profits or lost data.

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for fraud, wilful misconduct, or anything else that cannot lawfully be limited under the laws of your jurisdiction.

11. Termination

You can stop using the Service at any time. We can suspend or terminate your account for material breach of these Terms or for prolonged inactivity, after reasonable notice where possible. Upon termination, sections that by their nature survive (data ownership, limitation of liability, governing law) continue to apply.

12. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Kosovo. Any dispute that cannot be resolved by good-faith email exchange goes to the courts of Pristina. EU consumers retain whatever mandatory protections their local consumer-protection law provides; nothing in this clause overrides those.

13. Changes

We may revise these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be announced on the changelog and via the recovery email on file (if any). Continued use of the Service after a change is in force means you accept the new Terms.
